2. Production Methods

Potassium sulphate is produced through two main industrial processes :

• Mannheim Process: This is the traditional synthetic method. Potassium chloride (KCl) is reacted with sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) in a high-temperature furnace. The reaction occurs in two stages, producing potassium sulphate and hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas as a by-product . The resulting SOP is of high quality, with a K₂O content of over 50% and less than 1-2% chloride .

• Recovery from Natural Minerals: This process involves mining natural complex salts like kainite or langbeinite. The minerals undergo a series of reactions and leaching steps to extract pure potassium sulphate. This method is increasingly dominant in countries with natural deposits due to its lower capital and operating costs .

Historically, the compound has been known since the 14th century and was studied by notable chemists like Glauber and Boyle. It was given various names, such as sal duplicatum and arcanum duplicatum, and used in early medicine as a diuretic .

3. Primary Applications

The main application of potassium sulphate is in agriculture, but it also has several industrial uses.

A. Agricultural Fertilizer (SOP)

As a fertilizer, SOP is prized for providing essential nutrients without the harmful effects of chloride .

• Key Nutrients: It supplies a high concentration of potassium (typically around 50% K₂O) and sulfur (approximately 18% S), both critical for plant health .

• Role in Plants: Potassium is essential for photosynthesis, enzyme activation, and water regulation, helping plants resist drought and disease . Sulfur is vital for protein synthesis and overall crop quality .

• Chloride-Free Advantage: SOP is the preferred potassium source for chloride-sensitive crops such as tobacco, citrus fruits, potatoes, and various berries. Chloride in other fertilizers can reduce the quality and yield of these crops .

• Benefits: It improves fruit size, color, and firmness, increases the nutritional value and shelf life of produce, and is suitable for use in fertigation and organic farming systems .
