Petroleum ether is a highly flammable, colorless liquid hydrocarbon mixture, not an actual ether in the chemical sense. It is a light, volatile petroleum distillate primarily composed of aliphatic (straight-chain) and alicyclic (cyclic) hydrocarbons in the C5–C10 range.

Key Properties and Composition

• Misleading Name: The term "ether" is a misnomer; petroleum ether contains no ether functional groups. It is also known as naphtha, benzine, ligroin, or white spirit.

• Variable Composition: It is a complex mixture with a typical composition of 50-80% paraffins, 20-40% monocycloparaffins, and 2-10% aromatics, varying based on the source and refining process.

• Physical Characteristics: It is insoluble in water and has a distinctive odor like natural gas or gasoline. Its boiling point range and density depend on the specific grade (e.g., 35-60°C, 40-60°C, or 60-80°C), making it useful for various applications.

Uses

Petroleum ether is widely used as a nonpolar solvent, especially in:

• Laboratories: For extraction of oils, fats, and bioactive compounds from natural products due to its low boiling point and non-polar nature.

• Industry: As a solvent in paints, varnishes, inks, adhesives, and as a degreasing agent. It is also used in the rubber and pharmaceutical industries.

Safety and Hazards

Petroleum ether is a dangerous substance requiring careful handling:

• Extreme Flammability: It has a very low flash point (as low as -57°F/-49°C) and its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air.

• Health Risks:

  • Aspiration Hazard: Swallowing the liquid and having it enter the lungs can be fatal.

  • Toxicity: Vapors can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and respiratory irritation. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause damage to the nervous system. Skin and eye irritation are also common effects.

• Environmental Hazard: It is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Due to these hazards, petroleum ether must be stored away from ignition sources and used with appropriate personal protective equipment in a well-ventilated area.
